fracture of the base of the first metacarpal bone, extending into the carpometacarpal joint Etiology: - punching a hard object - a fall onto the thumb, such as from bicycle falls Epidemiology: - most common type of fracture of the thumb Pathology: - nearly always accompanied by some degree of subluxation or dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint
